The ear receives sounds from all around us, so a person can involuntarily hear a lot of different things simultaneously. Focusing the hearing to actively pay attention and concentrate on certain sounds is a high-level cognitive skill. So, the difficulty discerning background noises and focusing their listening means a person is failing to process and analyze the sensory information coming in through the ear.

For example, while at a coffee shop, a person can struggle to focus on their interaction with barista because they’re unable to focus their hearing to listen to what the barista is asking as the chatter and various noises within the coffee shop is overflooding their auditory senses and their brain cannot analyze the various sensory messages. This dysfunction can contribute to many physiological, psychological, and emotional challenges for a person.
